Photo Gallery - Bulgarian Railways.

Welcome to the section! The gallery is arranged by chronological order, along with the relevant subsections. Of course we could not create the "entire" and totally finalised gallery, but we shall try to be detailed as much as we could. We wish to express our huge appreciation to all of the Bulgarian and foreign authors, who shared their photographs with us. We hope that in the process of filling in the gallery, we will find a lot of followers, who will give their contribution to the Rail Ways’ history in Bulgaria.
Steam Locomotives
The first railway route across the nowadays Bulgarian land is Rousse -Varna (224 km.) The line was opened for exploitation on 7 November, 1866. After the liberation of Bulgaria of Ottoman slavery, has been build the first state railway: Tzaribrod - Sofia - Vakarel. That marks the beginning of the railway progress in Bulgaria. In many years the steam is main engine, as in the time of steam locomotives’ exploitation, Bulgaria succeeds to maintain an extraordinary high technical level. Diesel Locomotives
By a series of small double axle industrial locomotives, delivered by Deutz, in 1942 starts the exploitation of diesel engines at the Bulgarian Railways. Later on – in 1963, Bulgaria starts to import the first main line diesel-hydraulic locomotives, built by Simmering Graz Pauker - Austria. By implementing the diesel traction, the accommodations for servicing by the diesel brigades get better, as well as the transportation quality. In the course of time, the diesel traction displaces the steam locomotives almost in all the fields of passenger and freight trains’ servicing...

Electrical Locomotives
The first series of electrical locomotives at the Bulgarian Railways, were delivered in 1962-1963, by the Skoda factories Czechoslovakia. The official opening of the first electrified route Sofia-Plovdiv was on 27 April, 1963. Although the projects for electrification of segments are dated years ago, a serious reconsideration of the routes’ standards and technologies was required. Following the Sofia – Plovdiv route’s electrification, starts a regular creation of new and reconstruction of old routes...

The old freight cars
The old freight cars can be spotted more and more rarely. The representatives of this category, which have survived until nowadays are in poor condition. Some of them form service trains for construction and maintenance of the railway infrastructure. Others have been preserved and restored for attraction-journeys of the Bulgarian State Railways...

Diesel trains DMUs / Diesel Multiple Units
The representatives of DMUs in Bulgaria are vastly more and divers than the EMUs. Their first deliveries date from the period of 1905-1908. Our first diesel train is series 21-01 and is constructed in the GANZ-Budapest works, and one of the most popular DMUs in the BDZ is series 24, manufactured in the FIAT-Torino works which can develop a top speed of 135 km/h!...

Built for the comfort of the traveler, the railway stations represent an irrevocable part of the railway route. Divers in architectural style and type they impress and delight passengers, tourists and visitors. These are also the places from where the railway traffic is being controlled through the signalization, centralization and blocking systems...

The old passanger cars
Since when have we been seeing them in lots of movie productions, which are dedicated to the Second World War time, besides a bit later on? The constant scent of romance with a savour of smuts and shining green paint: these are they again - the old passenger coaches! Within the section we shall pay attention to the four and eight wheel wagons, as well as the relevant serving wagons of that time...

Low capacity locomotives
Here you can find pictures of diesel shunter locomotives, which have appeared in the BDZ traction along the time, which have been regularly provided, periodically bought or reconstructed from other vehicles. These are mainly the first diesel shunter engines of BDZ, which were supplied for the very first time in August, 1942 from the HUMBOLDT-DEUTZMOTOREN A.G works. ...
